Report from Daviess & Martin County events 2-16-08

We made over 200 new voter contacts this Saturday with the three events.

This Saturday was another very busy day.

Saturday morning I met with the Loogootee United Methodist Church men’s club for breakfast. Thank you to Paul Mcfeaters for inviting me to meet with their group. Paul ran for State Representative against Dave Crooks in 2004 and came very close to winning. After the breakfast, Paul & I spent quite a bit of time discussing strategy for Martin County. Thank you Paul for your support!

Saturday evening was the Martin County Lincoln Day Dinner. Kim & I attended this together. Earl Boyd, the Chairman of the Martin County Republican Party, invited me to attend and speak to the group. The main point of my comments was the importance of electing representatives at every level of government that understands the importance of the founding principles of our country. What makes this country great is the freedom, liberty, and entrepreneurial spirit of its citizens, not any socialistic government programs. There were about 75 people in attendance, and the response was very positive. Secretary of State Todd Rokita was the main speaker for the evening. In his talk he referenced a Scottish historian, Professor Alexander Tyler that had studied the democratic societies throughout history and wrote the following comments in the late 1700’s. Professor Tyler wrote “A democracy will continue to exist up until the time that voters discover they can vote themselves generous gifts from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always vote for the candidates who promise the most benefits from the public treasury, with the result that every democracy will finally collapse due to loose fiscal policy, which is always followed by a dictatorship.” I though it was quite interesting that we had both zeroed in on the same basic idea. Don’t we hear candidates at all levels making promises like this? I’m not ready to give up and throw in the towel yet! I think what this country has to offer is worth fighting for and so I am getting involved!

About 8:30, Kim & I left to attend an NRA fundraiser in Montgomery. There were about 100+ people at this event. When the auction was over, we were able to meet most of the people in attendance. I was able to have good stimulating conversations with several people. One man asked me, “What are you going to do for me?” My answer was the same as the points I made in my earlier talk. I told him “I will give you a representative that understands the importance of protecting the founding principals of our country, understands the importance of fiscal responsibility, will fight to protect the unborn, and will protect citizen’s rights to possess fire arms.” He liked my answer. I won’t get into the give-away promise game. I know Professor Tyler was right.
